Jean Rigby - District Councillor

North Turton with Tockholes

Looking after your children and their future...

Much has been done and said about the recent proposed changes of Boltons' Schools Admission Policy. In order that we may co-ordinate our actions better as ward councillor, I will keep you informed on this website about upcoming dates and developments as I receive them.

Whilst the future looks reasonably good for children living in Chapeltown and Edgworth, there are concerns for children living on the outskirts of Edgworth and Belmont.

The parents and governors of Belmont School have appealed to the adjudicator but sadly the appeal was dismissed.  A further appeal cannot be considered for three years and this must be done with grounds different from ones already used.  This will prove difficult as it was felt that every possible step was taken to persuade the adjudicator that children should be allowed access to T:Mac.

Some parents and children from Belmont have visited Sharples school and the children appeared to be suitable impressed.

There are concerns relating to transporting children to school, but the authority is legally bound to arrange transporatation.

Obviously there are some children in Turton whose parents may wish to consider private education in view of the uncertaintly with Turton High School, but it is possible this may have been a probability anyway.

The company responsible for transporting the children to Turton High have recently been using a smaller bus, with lap straps, unfortunately there was not a provision for children to stand so some where turned away.  Following a discussion and meeting with the transport company the original buses were back on duty.
